Mac G5 to PC
I have a long-term project of wanting to convert a Powermac G5 case into a PC case. I acquired one FOC, but it is slightly damaged. The plan is to produce an ATX tray and I/O back panel, before sorting the damage, reassembling and getting it powder coated black.
The G5 case is fairly straightforward to strip down; it is all screwed together, but with small torq screws in awkward places; and there are also a lot of them. The main outer shell is the damaged part; it has a dent in the loop of a foot, and a large dent in the side. The foot is fairly easy to straighten, as any marks won't be visible. the dent on the side is another matter. The Aluminium case is approx. 3mm thick, and hard to work; the dent needs to be removed perfectly, otherwise it will show up in the finish. As I plan on getting the case powder coated for durability, I cannot simply fill the dent and sand it smooth.
A standard ATX tray has been sourced from a spare case, and when I am happy with the repair of the G5, I shall start to reassemble it and marry in the new tray.
As the G5 came complete, I have the original 1000W PSU. I shall either try to convert it to ATX standard, or replace the guts with a decent ATX PSU. Most likely something towards the latter.
