3D Printer

<- Back to Projects

I currently own two FDM 3D printers; an Original Prusa i3 MK2 and a RepRapPro Huxley. I am expecting to receive an ONO 3D SLA/DLP printer sometime this millennia.

Below you will find a selection of projects not directly associated with a printer.

Horizontal filament holder

A very early design, based on a thrust bearing. The filament spool lies flat and spins on a bunch of "BB" pellets. This is not a very good spool holder; the filament winds tend to fall about, and if there is a snag, the holder falls apart dropping balls everywhere.

Building on the failure of the Horizontal holder, I designed a vertical, enclosed box that bolts to the bottom of the table. The box is made from laser cut acrylic, with a clear PETG front flap. The spool runs on a piece of acrylic tube, resting on some carriers. A tube coupler is mounted on the back face, allowing a bowden tube to deliver the filament to the printer in a controlled manner. This is particularly good for hygroscopic materials such as Nylon as it limits the contact with outside air. The front flap is sealed with weather stripping tape, and there is a large silica gel bag inside, to keep humidity to a minimum.
When I upgraded to dual extruders on the Huxley, I built a second box, and when I upgraded the Prusa to MMU I built an extended double box to hold two rolls - one of which can be a 2.3kg spool. The two single boxes bolt to the bottom, creating a stack that nearly touches the floor.
